Now's Your Chance to Get on the Committee Studying Water Use
Nothing gets Santa Cruzans more riled up than water. The city is starting a new committee to make recommendations.

After loud community outcry against a plan to build a desalination plant to bring more fresh water to Santa Cruz, the city council agreed to appoint a 14-member commission to study water.

The application period for that committee starts Dec. 19 and lasts through Jan. 15.

Applications are available online at www.cityofsantacruz.com/wsac and through the Office of the City Manager and the Water Department.

The makeup of the Water Supply Advisory Committee will include:

3 business group reps

3 environmental group reps

3 at large

1 non-city resident

1 Desal Alternative

1 Sustainable Water Coalition

2 City Water Commissioners

Applications will be reviewed by the City Council Nominating Committee, which will provide the City Council with a list of nominees for review and acceptance in February.

“The Committee’s work is critically important to the process of developing recommendations for consideration by the City Council,” said Mayor Lynn Robinson. “We’re very encouraged by the initial community interest in this process and are confident the Committee will have well qualified representatives from throughout the Santa Cruz water service area.”
