Desalination could be the answer

Santa Cruz Sentinel, 11/26/13

California has, in the past and the present, faced a series of water shortages. However, we have an unused, potentially endless water supply very near to us: the ocean.

Desalination plants along the coastline may be a major step to ensuring that Californians get the water that they need.

While it can be argued that they would be prohibitively expensive, the alternative of piping or shipping in water from elsewhere is not any better of an option. It may even seem like this is an idea to be implemented far in the future.

However, there are already plans in place to convert a power plant in Moss Landing to a desalination plant.
