Don't kill desal prematurely

Santa Cruz Sentinel, 10/13/13

Winston Churchill mused, "It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried." The current debate about water is a classic example of democracy in action, but we're also experiencing the movie Ground Hog Day. For over 30 years, every previously identified viable option for addressing our water shortage has been shot down with similar attacks. After multiple publicly conducted evaluation processes by both the City and Soquel Creek Water District, desalination emerged as the best alternative to meet criteria such as feasible, sufficient, sustainable, environmentally sensitive, and cost effective. As we once more evaluate options for securing our water future, I urge every community member to learn the facts and consider desal in comparison to the alternatives. As John F. Kennedy opined, "The ignorance of one voter in a democracy impairs the security of all."
