Energy an issue in desal debate

Regarding the proposed desalination plant, the concern about energy use is being referenced quite regularly and I completely understand why. However, what seems to be lacking in the larger public discourse is that the City Council mandated the energy produced for the plant must be "net carbon neutral;" and that goal has been priority number one in developing the energy component of the project.

I was part of the large technical working group that met in June to evaluate various approaches to mitigating greenhouse gas GHG emissions, and there are some very creative and innovative approaches being examined.

Among the many options currently being evaluated, I have no doubt the goal for it to be "net carbon neutral" can and will be achieved.

The GHG emissions aspect is being taken very seriously and is a significant part of the project's design criteria.
