Letter to the Editor

Read your paper

Santa Cruz Sentinel, 9/6/13

To paraphrase today's Sentinel editorial: "Once Santa Cruz is in a water crisis equal to Soquel Creek, then the city of Santa Cruz will get desal back on track."

Do your editors read your own paper? How have you missed the body of evidence establishing the viability of numerous alternatives to desal? The beauty of these is each one works hand in hand the others. In combination, the use of recycled water, improved management of Loch Lomond, water exchanges, storm-water catchment and graywater systems all produce far more water than desal. They are eco-friendly, less expensive and demonstrate, at long last, we finally grasp that we live smack in the middle of a rainforest. We are learning to live within the limits, as well as the abundance, of our watershed. So read your paper. It's only $1.50.
