As We See It: Hits and Misses

Editorial Board, Santa Cruz Sentinel, 8/9/11

Loch Lomond Santa Cruz County's one and only reservoir marked its 50th anniversary Saturday. Concerns over rampant growth killed plans for other dams in the county, so the Loch, originally called Newell Creek Reservoir, has remained an important cog in the water supply for Santa Cruz. It's also beloved as a lovely and idyllic recreational spot in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where time can stop on a summer's afternoon amid the sun-sparkled water and tree-lined banks. Loch Lomond apparently will take on an increased importance in coming years as the lake, heretofore mostly a backup water supply, will be used more and more as the city complies with the federal government's directive to keep enough water in local streams to protectfish.
