Nobody needs desal plant

Santa Cruz Sentinel, 7/15/13

The road to hell, they say, is paved with good intentions, and if the City Council and developers have their way, one of the few remaining open spaces along gloriously scenic West Cliff Drive will be paved over with a water-intake pump station the size of a Chevron station. This hideous, noisy facility will roar away night and day, driving tons of sea water to a colossal (both in size and cost) desal plant nobody actually needs if adequate conservation measures are implemented. But conservation is anathema to developers. Adding insult to injury, all Westside residents will immediately be switched over to desal water, with only a lessthan- 100 percent effective filter standing between their morning cuppa and whatever happens to be in the ocean at the time - think Fukushima cocktail.
