Comment period extended for desal report

SANTA CRUZ -- The city of Santa Cruz and Soquel Creek Water District announced Friday an extension of the public comment period on the draft environmental impact report for their joint seawater desalination project.

The report was released May 13 and a comment period was set to expire July 15. But officials decided to extend it after numerous requests from the public.

"It's clear that the public has become engaged in discussing our future water supply," Mayor Hilary Bryant said in a statement. "Extending the comment period allows more people to join in the discussions. It's my hope that this additional time will enable more involvement."

The comment period will now end 5 p.m. Aug. 12. Members of the public who wish to submit comments by send them to Heidi Luckenbach, desalination program coordinator, at, or City of Santa Cruz, Water Department, 212 Locust St., Suite C, Santa Cruz, CA 95060. Comments may be submitted after that date but officials are not obligated to respond.

The city's Water Commission will host a meeting to receive public comment from 6:30-9 p.m. Monday at First Congregational Church, 900 High St., Santa Cruz.
