Water district names new chief

Kim Adamson is joining Soquel Creek Water District as general manager starting July 8, succeeding interim manager Taj Dufour.

Since 2005, Adamson has been general manager at the Beacon Hill Water and Sewer District in southwestern Washington. Beacon Hill co-owns a 16-million-gallons-per-day wastewater treatment plant and just completed construction of a co-owned 20-million-gallons-per-day drinking water treatment plant.

She previously was a project engineer for major public works construction projects. She has a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and a master's in public administration. She has been active in water and wastewater issues at the state level and Rotary Club member for 14 years.

With all of its water supply threatened by seawater intrusion, the Soquel Creek Water District is implementing a 15 percent cutback this summer after two years of below-average rainfall and taking public comment on a draft environmental impact report for a proposed regional seawater desalination project. The agency provides water to Capitola, Aptos, La Selva Beach, Opal Cliffs, Rio Del Mar, Seascape and Soquel.

SANTA CRUZ

Kocher a leader in desal group

Santa Cruz Water Director Bill Kocher has been elected vice president of the board of CalDesal, a Sacramento-based nonprofit that promotes the consideration of desalination.

The city of Santa Cruz and Soquel Creek Water District are considering a joint seawater desalination plant to augment water supply.

"Kocher is taking a leadership position in statewide associations dedicated to water issues, to ensure the city has access to the most advanced technologies and solutions available," according to a press release issued by the city Thursday.

Kocher is a co-founder of the group, which counts many California water agencies among its members. For more information, go to www.caldesal.org.
