Water supply survey to be discussed Tuesday

Santa Cruz Sentinel, 4/27/14

Aptos -- Directors of the Soquel Creek Water District will discuss a community survey and re-evaluate providing will-serve letters to applicants currently seeking to build or remodel when they meet 7 p.m. Tuesday, at Seascape Resort, 1 Seascape Resort Drive, Aptos.

The survey shows concern about water supply issues has grown sharply since 2010, with strong agreement that new sources of water are needed. Results and recommendations will be presented Tuesday; public comment is welcomed.

On April 1, the board voted to defer approving new water connections because it is simultaneously evaluating the option of declaring a building moratorium, preventing any construction that would increase the overall water use on a site. A public hearing on the declaration of a groundwater emergency and moratorium is slated for June 3.

Facing a long-term water supply shortage, the district plans a new water use reduction program for fall. The program, which will include "water budgets" for residential customers and best management practices for businesses and institutions, aims to save enough water to slow down seawater intrusion as the search for additional water supplies continues.

Tuesday's meeting will be recorded by Community TV of Santa Cruz County for playbacks on channel 25/71. The board packet is posted at www.soquelcreekwater.org/meeting-minutes.
