Soquel Creek water board to weigh drought response

Santa Cruz Sentinel, 1/28/14

The Soquel Creek Water District's board has called a special meeting for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to discuss a response to Gov. Jerry Brown's designation of a statewide drought.

The board will consider adopting a resolution supporting the governor's call for a 20 percent voluntary reduction in water consumption statewide. Or the board could instruct staff to draft a plan for enacting emergency rates to pay for mandatory rationing of 25 percent, which involves a loss in income due to selling less water and increased expenses for enforcement.

During its next regular meeting, the board will discuss recycled water as a back-up supply option should a joint seawater desalination project with Santa Cruz not happen.

The meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 4 will be in the Capitola Council Chamber, 420 Capitola Av
